Project-Based Learning
Project Based Learning (PBL) is a 21st Century approach to learning that is student focused and student driven. In PBL, students work collaboratively on projects that can span a few lessons, a term or an entire semester.
When participating in PBL, students are faced with solving real world issues and complex questions. As a result, students develop collaboration, creativity and higher order thinking skills, as well as deeper content knowledge and understanding, all skills that are in demand in our rapidly changing world.
KAS has developed a PBL approach to learning over a number of years in order to increase student engagement, make learning fun and to equip students with appropriate skills for the 21st Century workforce. PBL has been incorporated into main Key Learning Areas (KLAs) from pre-Kindy to Year 12. The “Festival of Cre8tivity’ has occurred in both the primary and secondary school on an annual basis since 2016. During the Festival of Cre8tivity, timetabled classes are collapsed and students engage in a project of their choice. In 2019, the Festival of Cre8tivity was entirely student led, with projects ranging from a KAS Farm petting zoo, solving a crime scene to a Masterchef competition.
The annual Make a Difference Week (MAD) is now PBL focused. MAD week occurs in Term 4 and all students in Years 7-10 are involved in service and community projects, that they identify, organise, develop and deliver.
